Government investigators propose revised rules for young crime suspects – Sveriges Radio

– I’m cautiously optimistic. It is important that we live up to international criticism, and break the isolation of children in custody, says Interior Minister Anders Ygeman today received the investigation.

Sweden during many years been criticism from international quarters, both for long detention periods and how people held incommunicado.

Among other things, the UN Child Rights Commission and the European Committee against Torture criticized the fact that so many children detained with restrictions.

The government requested that the regulations would be reviewed.

The investigator, Judge Inger Söderholm suggests that young people under 18 years, most will sit coherent three months detainees, and adults over 18 years more than six months until the prosecution, with the exception of the very serious and difficult investigated crime.

In Sweden detained about 140 people under 18 years. Ten minors sit every day remand.

The Government investigators suggest that minors who are detained as a rule, should be placed on special youth who get special prison departments.

– With this, we’ll remove the isolation of children because of the youth homes there school, teacher, and a very different staffing levels than that found at the detention center, says Inger Söderholm.

Other suggestions are options to detention, including tagging of the suspect who may have house arrest or district jail, where correctional monitors electronically the person stays within certain coordinates.

– and there’s great development in this area where the field of electronic capabilities to monitor, said government investigators Inger Söderholm.

tagging think we can be useful especially for long detentions, even when a now-detained persons appeal to appeal to the Court of appeal, and negotiations have already been in the District Court.
