Now we are investigating the subway that connects Gothenburg – Gothenburg Post

Henrik Munck (MP), Deputy Chairman of the Traffic Committee, the City of Gothenburg and the representative of Gothenburg urban Forum

Debate the quality of public transport is vital for a city’s development and environmental impact must be reduced. There needs to be more convenient to get to school, work, cultural and leisure activities. Therefore, we will now have a Metro-like solution to traffic in Gothenburg, writes Henrik Munck (MP).

Gothenburg public transport is currently too slow to be really attractive. This is true even in the tongue streets from the northeast, southwest, and on Hisingen. And above all, the speed through the center often level with horse and carriage.

The speed of public transport is important for the traveler but also to create cost-efficient service. When you drive faster time fewer carriages perform the same transport work as more cars running slow. And running quickly so choose more public transport. A virtuous cycle is created to expand traffic on.

Missing the most important

“Vision for city traffic in 2035″ has recently been circulated. This strategy contains many good proposals for the development of bus and rail services, and the cable car. But unfortunately, it is not important; a solution to securely accelerate the heavy streets of the suburbs and fast public transport through the center. In the Green Party’s initiative has therefore traffic committee asked for a further investigation of faster rail traffic in the streets where most traveling and around the overpass rail traffic through the center.

A golden rule in traffic is, not least for reasons of cost, using existing infrastructure best way. Outside the city center, large sections of the tram network in Gothenburg already built on its embankment which makes it possible to upgrade to a higher standard. This includes Set-ridden banana and Frölunda Line. With so-called “duovagnar” that can run on both tram and rail, it is therefore to create a metro-like system in Gothenburg which 90 percent is based on existing and already approved rail infrastructure.

Kostnadadseffektivt systems

A cost effective alternative might look like this: Angered Line and Frölunda track upgraded for higher speeds (100 km / h) and with fyrspårstationer so fast duovagnar can pass trams. A new connection is created at the Old Town between the current track and the northern entrance to the West Link. And in Västlänken south of Haga built new connecting rock tunnel with stations for Chalmers and Medicinareberget. Additional station entrances can be created including from Landala, Guldheden Sahlgrenska and Linnéplatsen. The new tunnel opens at Annedalskyrkan for connection to Frolunda course.

Gothenburg’s first metro line would radically shorter journey times through the city center and to Angered and Frölunda / Tynnered. The existing line of route which is led by some of the West Link and the new mountain tunnel allows such Angered at Sahlgrenska and Tynnered to the Centre, can walk in half the travel time compared to today. This is superior travel time gains compared to that proposed in the Vision 2035, and it can be achieved at a fraction of the cost of a separate new subway system. Big boost in travel combined with highly effective traffic means that a significant part of the investment is likely to be recognized is a purely commercial grounds.

Positive effect for the entire Gothenburg

Tunnel solution also gives positive effect for the whole of Gothenburg. Plan Separately fewer traffic barriers in the urban environment and by Brunnsparken relieved to other public transport is accelerated. And not least, do shorter travel times that distances can reduce our divided city; both physically and socially.

Gothenburg second metro line can start in Bergsjön and connected to the system via an already planned new tunnel from Kortedala to Angered line. In the southwest, this line branch from Marklandsgatan to the urban development project along the Dag Hammarskjold Boulevard and on to Järnbrott / Askim. The entire northeastern Gothenburg moved so much closer to the center of the travel time.

At Linnéplatsen also start the planned light rail tunnel through Stigberget to Lindholmen and the future expanded light rail system in Hisingen. In combination with the two metro lines are also connected to the system Hisingen and the entire city built Gothenburg reached thus of high-quality public transport. That is a radical improvement over today and we really connects the city.

We have to lift our eyes

We need to lift our eyes and dare to take the grip Gothenburg needs. West Link is a regional effort, and the investigation will show whether it can also be the backbone of an efficient subway system and thus be Gothenburg’s main artery. And yes, the tunnel’s capacity can probably cope with both regional, commuter and subway trains.

Underground or not, Gothenburg, perhaps the most important crossroads in this century. What is certain: Göteborg, academia, industry, and public services are all winners with high-quality public transport. The municipality, the region, and Traffic Authority must cooperate to utilize existing infrastructure in the best way. Then Sweden’s second city to get a cost-effective public transport for the benefit of present and future generations from Gothenburg.
