Since the beginning of June, the twelve animals died near Omberg in Östergötland, which eleven of confirmed anthrax. Agriculture carries out a mass vaccination of all cattle, sheep and goats in the area around Omberg where the first animals died. Around 4000 animals should be vaccinated, but there may be more, according to the Agriculture Department.

In the meantime, a great work of dealing with the dead animals and clean up the area. The people who work most closely, especially the dead animals, have been given antibiotics to avoid being infected. An operation in Östergötland County Medical fielded.

– We use both belt and braces. Because the infection is so severe if you are infected, we want better cure unnecessarily than to risk anything, says Britt Åkerlind, infectious disease physician in Region Östergötland.

The last time it was known that a man were infected and died of anthrax was in 1956. the outbreak of anthrax among animals occurred in both 2008 and 2011, there was no man who became infected those times.

For a person to become infected, she needs to be very close to the animal, basically get for example the infected animal’s blood on them. But for those who become infected with anthrax, mortality is high, 90 percent if you are infected by the lungs and 20 percent if you are infected through the skin. Therefore, it is precisely those who handle dead animals which have received antibiotics.

– We are not worried that people without it is the animal world that worries us, but it will be a massive infection in the animal world there are reasons to worried for the people, says Britt Åkerlind.

the areas where animals have died in anthrax has been cordoned off and is a major effort underway that could take more than a month. When all the animals have been vaccinated, it takes two weeks before the vaccine provides full immunity.

– Only about a month, we can begin to relax, says Catrin Molander
Chief of Staff of Agriculture’s crisis organization.

to stop the infection prioritizes Agriculture particular vaccination of animals and to identify new cases.

the eruptions of 2008 and 2011 was caused by the old anthrax graves accidentally dug up and gave rise the infection. But it is still unclear what caused the outbreak around Omberg. There is a theory that insects have spread the infection, says Karl Ståhl at the National Veterinary Institute (SVA) said.

Today burns to the animals affected by anthrax but sooner they dug down. Most graves around the country are probably safe but it can be found graves that are not dug deep enough, says Catrin Molander.

In the Östergötland noticeable concern among the general public after anthrax outbreak , writes Swedish Radio. It is unpleasant to not know where the infection comes in from Alex says Bo staying at a hostel near Omberg.

It’s not just cattle that died from anthrax, but also a horse and a moose. Game Animals can become infected by anthrax and also spread the infection but at present Agriculture has no planned effort for the wildlife in the area.

Anthrax

Anthrax is an infection formed by a spore-forming bacterium, also known as anthrax. It is common for cows, sheep and goats suffering from anthrax by grazing, drinking water or eating food which anthrax spores are. Horses can also become infected by anthrax, but is not as sensitive as cows.

Sooner dug often down animals died of anthrax, called anthrax graves, and because the spores can survive for long time, 80-100 years, there is a risk that these may come up during excavation work. The spores are also naturally present in the soil although they rarely are concentrated in one place.

People infected not of anthrax in contact with the earth, but in direct contact with the blood of animals that died of anthrax . In countries where the disease is prevalent the infection can come from untreated products such as wool or leather from infected animals.

Anthrax spores can also be used in biological warfare as sending letters and spread the infection, something usually associated with terrorism. In order to spread the infection in the air need spores change and dose to be high, which is why anthrax infection for animals is not the same as in a targeted attack.

It is safe to eat meat and dairy products produced in the area, said Agriculture Department.
