– the first time we discovered is that the tumors actually sows the seeds of its own destruction, says cancer expert Charles Swanton, who led the new study, the British Guardian.
new findings show that cancerous lung and skin cells that, when they spread in the body, carry on a kind of biological “flags” – flags that the immune system can be instructed to attack. And as the flags only on cancer cells are the “ideal target” for new therapies that take advantage of the immune system to fight the disease.
The British and American researchers behind the study, unveiled in Science, believe that the new methods – if indeed they have proven effective – is most effective against cancers with many mutations, such as skin and lung cancer. But researchers hope that cancer of the prostate, bladder and pancreas will be treated in the same way.
Within two or three years hoping Charles Swanton that the method will be tested on patients suffering from lung cancer – a disease that annually kills over a million people worldwide.
