The Swedish Migration Board is waiting to build modular housing – Sveriges Radio

Modular houses are to solve the shortage of accommodations among those seeking asylum. A modular house is a temporary and simple house, for example, can be used as home, office or school.

From the beginning decided Immigration Service together with 70 municipalities, to build modular housing. Some of them have already started to build. But a few days ago sent the Swedish Migration Board a letter to these municipalities. They wrote in the letter to “pause plans”.

Anna Lindh Wikblad work as head of Luleå, and she is one of those who received such a letter from the Immigration Service. She is both surprised and saddened by their message. She says she recently talked to the Swedish Migration Board, and they sounded positive. She says she thought they had a partnership.

– I’m surprised, because we had fairly recent talks with the Swedish Migration Board that sounded very positive, she said.

Magnus Gustavsson works at the Migration Board. He says that the reason they do not build modular houses now, is that the work has not ended up with the right authority. He says it is not the Migration Board’s main task to build. He says there are other agencies that will be responsible.

– It is well that the issue should be on the right authority. I think that it is looking at. Migration Board does not have as main task to build, but there are other agencies that have the expertise, he said.
