Policies. By the Center leader and former Prime Minister Thorbjorn Fälldin is dead. He died at his home in Ramvik on Saturday night.

Fälldin was a very popular person, says the former Center Party leader Maud Olofsson told TT after the news of his death.

– as I have traveled around the world as a politician, I have always received greetings to Thorbjorn, from all sides. All have great respect for Thorbjorn Fälldin. And I got the chance and the pleasure to tell him.

“very encouraging”

Fälldin has been a support and a mentor for both herself and other women, says Olofsson .

– I could call him and discuss various issues and he always had good advice to give. And so he stopped often to say “stand on your lass!”.

Fälldin has also meant a lot to the current Center leader Annie Lööf, who late on Saturday night were told that Fälldin fallen asleep.

– He got in touch with me with handwritten letters and commented on the political situation. I received a letter as late as June. He was very encouraging and caring, says Loof said.

United bourgeoisie

His biggest impression on Sweden’s political history is precisely that he broke the Social Democrats’ long dominance, says author and journalist Olle Svenning who has written a biography of Fälldin.

– He was the man who ousted the social Democrats after 40 years, it is his great deed. And he united bourgeoisie.

Nuclear Critics

His great political project was the commitment to the countryside. Fälldin stood for a kind of civilization critical path, says Svenning.

– It was a driving force for his criticism of nuclear power, that it was about to acquire a technique that could wipe out all of humanity . And so this to impoverished rural areas, that it took resources from rural areas and that it disappeared gradually and became poorer – he would be horrified by what has happened in recent years.

Many still remember Fälldin statement 1976 – “no minister post could be so desirable that I am willing to COMPROMISE with my beliefs,” a promise not to charge the new nuclear reactors – which, however, he backed away.

Fälldin was Prime Minister during the submarine crisis in autumn 1981, when a Soviet submarine ran aground in the Karlskrona archipelago.

– Keep the limit! were his definite orders to the commander.

Earlier Moderate leader Ulf Adelsohn, who was sitting in office while Fälldin, remembers his friend:

– He was a lovely and straight person. Many thought he was slow, but none could he in a one-liner to catch a situation or a whole political events.
