An old bell tower in Sigtuna caught fire during the night.
The fire grew rapidly in strength and fire department could only look on as the 1700s the building was burned down.
– It is very boring, says Håkan Gezelius, lead operator at the emergency services.
the alarm came in to the fire department Attunda at 00:31 and then sent four forces to place.
Carl Farberger, 48, lives just 500 meters from the belfry. His wife called out to him when she saw the flames through the window.
put out small fires
– I had not heard some sirens and saw it was not burned so I feared that it was a house fire. So I took the big fire extinguisher at the ready in case they needed to save someone says Carl Farberger.
When he and his wife got to the scene of the fire, they saw with great sadness that it was the belfry.
– that I could do then was that run around with the fire extinguisher and put out the small fires that occurred in the forest. In the end, I was pretty singed. I could not continue, says Carl.
When the fire department arrived he handed over the fire extinguisher to a firefighter who could continue to run around with it in the forest.
A storied building
Victor Nell Beck, 19, was sitting just steps away from the fire when he saw how the flames broke up.
– we just saw how the smoke and then we saw a light. I have lived here for 19 years and thought what is it that burns, said Viktor Nellbeck.
He came up the hill where the bell tower is located and saw the old building burned down.
The bell tower is from the early 1700s and stands next to St Mary’s Church and St. Olaf’s church ruins in downtown Sigtuna. It usually call twice a day.
– It’s a typical Sigtuna symbol, said Viktor Nellbeck.
Carl Farberger is on the same thing.
– tomorrow will be the first day that the bells will not be possible to secure one hundred years, he said.
“Is very boring”
Hakan Gezelius, lead operator at the Greater Stockholm Fire, says that when they arrived the fire was already fully developed. The bell tower has been burned to the ground.
– It is very boring, says Håkan Gezelius.
He expects the troops will remain on the site for a while to perform after extinguishing. How the fire started is currently unclear.
The rescue during the evening even got to go on the container fires and small fires in Sigtuna. It is currently unclear whether the fires have any connection.
