A shift in the Eritrean political rhetoric – Sveriges Radio

– I think it’s great. That they even mention his name is great, says Dawit Isaak’s daughter Bietelhem Isaak.

Dawit is the only prisoner of conscience. It was fifteen years since he was imprisoned in Eritrea and still has no prosecution.

Bear Tunbäck is a director of Reporters Without Borders and has over ten years working for Dawit Isaac release. He welcomes the statement of the Foreign Minister.

– It’s obviously very good to the foreign minister says this. And he opens of course also for the release.

Is this a shift in rhetoric from the eritrianska government?

– It can probably be seen as so. For the past year a little more than they have started admitting foreign journalists. There has been a process towards greater transparency, but there are still upwards of 10,000 political prisoners in the country. So even if you have started talking more open and revealed a more open attitude that is the basic problem remains, says Björn Tunbäck.

Just today puts the UN with investigating the human rights situation in Eritrea formally presented a report with devastating criticism of the Eritrean government, the military and the judiciary and the president.

when Sheila B. Keetharuth, special rapporteur of the Commission, summarized the criticism of the UN in May, she urged the Eritrean government to cease including extrajudicial executions, enforced disappearances, torture, unlawful detention, sexual violence and forced labor.

More and more are fleeing Eritreans leave Now the country, according to the UN 5000 Eritreans are fleeing every month. Bjorn Tunbäck on the Reporters Without Borders believes that it can va a reason for regime change rhetoric now.

– I simply believe that they have an acute problem. They need people, they must do something to reverse the trend and also suits the EU to reduce the influx of migrants to the EU. Therefore, I believe that there may be some kind of interaction here, says Björn Tunbäck.
