Freedom of the Press .. A Turkish prosecutor indicted today the Dutch freelance journalist Frederike Geerdink for “terrorist propaganda” and wish that she be sentenced to five years in prison.
Security forces detained Geerdink briefly in January and did a search of her home in Diyarbakir in southeastern Turkey. In the area there are many Kurds and according to the indictment should Geerdink repeatedly have posted messages on social media that support the banned Kurdish group PKK. Among other things, she according to local media have published a picture of the group’s flag.
Geerdink has repeatedly denied the allegations.
The detention of Geerdink triggered a wave of criticism against Turkey and also increased the an already great concern for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan increasing hardness of the issues of freedom of expression and press freedom in the country.
