Last year it emerged that the president’s wife was in the process of buying a multi-million home in the capital of a subsidiary of Grupo Higa, as part of a consortium with rail contract with the Mexican government. Finance Minister Luis Garay Vide also bought a property and borrowed money from the same company. It has also emerged that the president himself bought the property from another company with government contracts.
Corruption suspicions have been described as the worst crisis for Peña Nieto since he took office in 2012.
