Lack of tetanus vaccine for adults – Helsingborgs Dagblad

– There are small amounts here and there since ancient but there is a shortage across the country, says Peter Nolskog, infectious disease physician in the Västra Götaland Region, said.

The reason is that the Danish vaccine manufacturer SSI has not been able to deliver in autumn and winter.

It is unclear when the SSI deliver the vaccine again, but maybe in the spring, says Nolskog.

He underlines the SR P4 West that tetanus is very rare in Sweden and that alternative treatment is available for emergency cases in the form of immunoglobulin.

He also says that the vaccine for children are still in the country and do not look vaccine shortage for adults as a threat to patient safety.

– No, because virtually all children in Sweden are vaccinated since 1950 century and since we have this option with immunoglobulin that provides specific protection against tetanus bacterium poison. You just have to think that this option is available in serious cases.
