The shortage of student counselors for newly arrived students create problems in schools throughout Sweden. Four out of ten teachers say in a study that students do not get enough help – even though they have the legal right to do so.
For many new arrivals is a major need the guidance counselor at the student’s own native language – something which is currently lacking, according to many teachers.
in a survey Lärarförbundet made among its members represent nearly four in ten (38 percent) that their students do not get enough study on their native language.
– When it comes to student counselors law says that students are entitled to it, and this means that the law is not followed. Research shows that this is one of the most important educational efforts for new arrivals, says Johanna ‘Union Jaara Astrand said.
Ann-Margreth Jonsson has in his work as a teacher seen the problem up close, first for eight years in a Gothenburg School with high proportion of new arrivals, and now in a school in Tjörn outside Gothenburg, where the municipality just started receiving newly arrived children.
are at a loss
– It has been a fantastic reception and everyone really wants to help, but many colleagues are also at a loss . How to help when there are tutors, she says and continues:
– The sad part is that we put across very large responsibility on the students themselves.

Several proposals
Ann-Margreth Jonsson sees not only difficulties in the actual teaching, but also to such as the development discussions with parents.
– If the parents themselves can not have Swedish as student received interpret and it does not feel good. It can be very arbitrary and students corrects itself which leads to an absurd situation.
From Teachers Union now wants to see several measures, including the design of a training for tutors in the mother tongue and the development of opportunities for remote education in their mother tongue and study the native language.
– In order to cope with a situation here and now remote teaching is incredibly important. Where you have to find technical conditions, says Johanna Jaara Åstrand.
TT: But is not obvious shortcomings of having remote teaching?
– The teaching profession is a relationship professional and best work makes you physically currently but we have affirmed remote teaching in terms of language and for that matter study. We recognize that today’s access to are not enough teachers for pupils who have these needs.
