First child born after uterus transplantation – Swedish Radio

A Swedish woman has given birth to a child after receiving a womb through transplantation. It is the first time it happens, writes University of Gothenburg in a press release.

The transplant took place at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg and is one of seven who succeeded.

The research on uterine transplants have been ongoing at the University of Gothenburg since 1991, and the goal is for women who lack a womb from birth or after a cancer operation to get to feed their own children.

A total of nine women underwent womb transplant. The donor has in most cases been the patient’s mother.

In two cases, the uterus had to be removed. In one case, after an infection and in the other as a result of blood clots in the transplanted blood vessels.

The seven other women during the 2014 starting pregnancy attempts. Their fertilized eggs, which come about through IVF, or in vitro fertilization, has been returned to the uterus.

One of the women gave birth with the caesarean section in early September and became the first in the world childbirth from a transplanted uterus.

Mats Brännström, professor at the University of Gothenburg who leads the research and redeemed the woman saying that the newborn boy is perfectly healthy.

According to the press release is uterine infertility is the only form of female infertility which until now lacked treatment and over 200 000 women in Europe is estimated to be livmodersinfertila.

Two previous attempts with uterine transplants have been carried out, one in Saudi Arabia in 2000 and one in Turkey 2011. attempts succeeded thus not.
