Magnusson not surprised over criticism – Gothenburg Post

Cecilia Magnusson (M) now responding to reactions to her proposal to ban begging.

Member of Parliament and Göteborg Cecilia Magnusson’s opinion piece in the Daily News, where she suggests that begging should be banned, has caused strong reactions. Politicians and social commentators have in many places have rejected her proposal. Not least, representatives from her own party, the Conservatives, have reacted.

Justice Minister Beatrice Ask (M) was in Gothenburg on Wednesday and said so here on Magnusson’s article: “As a politician, you should not make proposals that does not solve the problem. Banning begging does not make the problem disappear, it is not possible to quickly eliminate poverty. “

But Cecilia Magnusson is not surprised critics storm.

– I knew it would be reactions. It’s not the party line to ban begging, it’s my understanding, she says to the GP.

Aaron Israelsson, editor of the newspaper The fact think the proposal is provocative. A ban risks becoming a dead letter, and he questions whether the police really should devote resources to put poor people behind bars.

Cecilia Magnusson says she has full respect for those comments. She says that the purpose of her article was to create awareness and initiate a discussion about beggars situation, with a focus on solutions.

– It is not the only solution I write about. I am convinced that we need to help these people in different ways.

and that the proposal to ban begging seen as provocative she agrees.

– Of course it is. Look at the UK, Norway, Denmark. Are they racist countries
