Johanna Fries Markiewicz is the director of preservation at the national Archives. She says that silverfiskarna has already damaged some books from the 1800s.
” What has happened now is that we have for the first time seen concrete damage, we have actually not done in the past.
The hungry långsprötade silverfiskarna has spread in Sweden in about two years, and is now found in almost all over the country. For some reason, they tend to occur in newly built houses, perhaps because of the material used in the construction process.
As their smaller cousins like långsprötade silverfiskarna moisture and darkness, and like to eat starch, which is found in great quantity in the Swedish national archives papperssamlingar.
Johanna Fries Markiewicz says that the damage has been discovered in a small closed and humid space in the library.
” It has been dark, and it has not been available during a period. And the conditions have very well been the ultimate for silverfiskarna.
She says to get away skadedjuret you have to clean a lot, and create a system that allows the library can continue to take in new material without silverfiskarna or their eggs can get into.
” We came to the parable of the killer slugs. But I think we’ll win them over easier than what it wins over the killer slug.
