Measurement: Students perform better – Smålandsposten

” We see a clear trend reversal after several years of falling earnings. It is very gratifying. The students have learned more and the work they have done together with their teachers, ” says Mikael Halápi, deputy director general of the national agency for Education in a press release

According to the survey, improving fjärdeklassarna in mathematics and reach the same level in the natural sciences as in the previous survey. Åttondeklassarna will be better in both math and science.

– The improved results are encouraging, but we still have a ways to go to toppresultaten from the middle of the 1990s, “says Mikael Halápi and continues:

” What improvements will depend on the needs to be examined more closely by us and the research community. At the same time, we know what contributes to a good school. Now it is to continue to develop the education, get more people to want to become a teacher and give the school the right conditions.

the TIMSS 2015 is an international study that investigates the fourth – and åttondeklassares knowledge in mathematics and science. Compared with the last survey in TIMSS 2011 improved all the results except one which remains at the same level.

IN the TIMSS in 2015 attended a total of 57 countries. The Swedish results are compared with the other EU – and OECD-countries participating in the study. In the mathematics performance of Swedish students, both fourth graders as eighth graders, slightly below the average in the EU and the OECD. Science performs fjärdeklassarna above average and åttondeklassarna on average.

Swedish high-school students who read advanced mathematics improve their performance in the TIMSS Advanced in 2015. At the same time deteriorates the results in physics compared with the previous survey in 2008. All according to the Swedish national agency for Education.

” It is very positive that things are going better for students taking the most advanced mathematics. At the same time, they perform still worse than students from most other countries in the study. That Swedish students have deteriorated in physics is cause for concern, even if they claim well in comparison with students from other countries, ” says Mikael Halápi.
