A slim majority think the EU is good.

What the british referendum on EU-membership and the presidential elections in the united states had in common is disbelief. Very many people believe that their opinions are not heard and that the decision-making bodies, managed by a political elite. The mistrust is growing in several european countries and is also shown in the latest Eurobarometer survey made on behalf of the EUROPEAN parliament.

Positive for the EU is that 71% of citizens in the union’s view that what unites europeans is more important than what separates them. 60% believe that their country benefited from membership, a clear increase against the previous measurements.

However, account for only 53 percent in a similar question to the EU is good for their own country, which is a decrease of 2 percentage points compared with the last survey in 2015. 54% believe that the EU is “going in the wrong direction”, an increase of 13 percentage points.

The Swedish responses in the survey are consistently clearly more positive. 64 percent believe that the EU is good for Sweden, an increase of 5 percentage points since 2015.

27 768 EU citizens participated in the survey, which was conducted from 24 september to 3 October.
