Sweden needs a national strategy against childhood obesity, write the eight researchers in the Dagens Nyheter op-ed piece. 17 per cent of the country’s seven – to nine-year-olds are overweight, which increases the risk for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
"We believe that Sweden, like several other countries, now need to collect actors from the whole society, develop a national strategy and to take action on several fronts to combat childhood obesity", they write.
the Researchers want to see a broad conversation in the community about the problem, and points out that knowledge is not lacking within the area, but that efforts need to be coordinated.
Sockerskatten proposed by many of the researchers believe are not a panacea.
"Even when a sockerskatt have the intended effect resolves, it is not everything", they write.
