A 45-year old man Västernorrland suspected to have forced his 25-year-old partner to sell sex to at least 24 different men. The evidence against the man is strong, believes the prosecutor.

In the interrogation, the woman said she felt compelled to sell sex because she was indebted to the man. Police have also identified 24 sex buyers, but the actual number is believed to be much higher.

The man denies the offense and held in custody awaiting sentence.

On the national police operations department, NOA, used to receive progress reports on prostitution and human trafficking from all police regions. A crime where both victims and perpetrators often come from countries with widespread poverty. But the police have also discovered another phenomenon, where extreme poverty is not the driving factor.

Kajsa Wahlberg’s national rapporteur on Noah and told SvD that the police discovered more cases in several parts of the country where Swedish men are selling off their partner Similarly, the prosecutor believes happened in the case of Västernorrland.

– We have seen a slight increase in reported cases of Swedish men exploiting his girlfriend, wife or partner, says Wahlberg.

to the poor live?

– the need may not even be so, but rather want to live a little more luxurious, have a debt to pay, or to buy drugs. This is something we have seen before, but the more such cases have been reported in the past two years.

It is about around ten suspected cases per year, which some have led to convictions. No big number, but police think they still see a changed pattern.

– Now it sometimes if to add to the household budget. And earlier, there has been a perception that it is only foreign pimps who do this, but it’s not, says Kajsa Wahlberg.

Where are the women come from?

– What distinguishes these women from entering the country in order to be sold for prostitution purposes is that these women have had a longer presence in Sweden, and have grown up here. It is established couples where the man got the idea to make money from the woman.

The women entering prostitution is different – it could be a feeling that they are in debt or that it has been manipulated by the you have strong feelings for. Police have also seen that women with intellectual disabilities used.

45-year-old in Västernorrland risk of being sentenced for aggravated pimping, which provides imprisonment for at least two years and a maximum of eight years.

– this is very serious and it is very helpful to the police in the Nord region have successfully detected despite scarce resources, says Kajsa Wahlberg.

the women who are exploited in prostitution in Sweden comes mainly from abroad, from countries such as Romania, Bulgaria and Nigeria. A majority of them are victims of organized sex trade.

Simon Häggström, manager for prostitution group in Stockholm, says that cases in which Swedish men received their partner to prostitute themselves are rare – but his team on several occasions discovered, for example, the Romanian men acting pimp to his partner.

– I can only think that we have had such a case last year where a Swedish girlfriend sold. The matter was closed down. The prosecutor did not think it was, says Häggström.

As SvD earlier told moves women systematically around the cities to be able to withdraw as much money as possible before the police grabs buyers. That there are police clutching sex buyers in Stockholm is a deterrent and therefore moved the woman to another medium sized city – therefore need more police officers working in prostitution and human trafficking in the country, says Häggström.

– I am absolutely convinced that we need pure-trafficking groups, he said.

in the autumn of 2015 came a directive from the national police chief Dan Eliasson that the police should strengthen efforts to fight human trafficking – but critics argue that too little has happened since then.

the work has gone slowly and reorganization within the police force have contributed to it.

– the goal is that there will be groups in the metropolitan regions that specialize in this, and the smaller communities should be supported in their work. We are not where we want to be yet, but it is heading in the right direction, says Kajsa Wahlberg.

The plan is to NOA now visit every police region to monitor how police lines have followed the directive, work started.
