Swedish universities drop in rankings – financial times

Education. A number of Swedish universities rank among world’s top universities.

It is the good news.

The bad: Most of the top losing investments mainly against the asian competitors.

When the british Times Higher Education presents its annual ranking of the world’s most prominent universities are Karolinska institutet (KI) clearly the best of the Swedish universities. The scandal surrounding the surgeon Paolo Macchiarini does not affect KI’s ranking, but it retains its 28th place from the previous year and is thus highest ranked of all the nordic universities.

in sweden there are eleven different universities on the list which are now being made for the 13th year in succession.

investments

“Generally speaking, the Swedish university successful when it comes to producing improvisational research. The country is also making huge investment in its universities”, says editor Phil Batty in a press release.

Less good is when the placements for the majority of the other Swedish universities. Uppsala (93 on the list), Lund (96) and Stockholm university (144) and the Royal institute of technology (159) lose all of the investments compared with the previous year. This also applies to a further four universities, only the trend break is the Gothenburg university, top ten investments to 170.

“Eight Swedish universities are losing ground, while universities in Asia are continuing their climbing. ‘The new superpower in education’ takes two new sites on the top 100 list, and a further four inside the top 200. Sweden will have to look up, for Asia’s leading universities climb”, writes Phil Batty.

Oxford in the top

the List is topped this year by last year’s runner-up the University of Oxford, which climbs past the California Institute of Technology prior to Stanford. Music charts are also dominated by the USA with six placings among the top ten. The magazine Times Higher Education bases its ranking on a number of different criteria, including university research and the extent to which it has been cited in scientific articles.
