Kriminolog: Straffskärpning will not deter – Sveriges Radio

But Madeleine Leijonhufvud, professor emerita of criminal justice university, says that it is important with a straffskärpning.

– these crimes can be very different difficult. A part can be so difficult that it justifies a very long prison sentence, just as has been introduced in the particularly serious crime in a lot of other crimes. So it is important and reasonable to have the possibility to rate, and that the punishment is tailored to the level of difficulty, says Madeleine Leijonhufvud.

Jerzy Sarnecki, who is a professor in criminology at Stockholm university, says that it is an important signal from society to make the penalty for the most serious sexualbrotten, by a new crime – particularly serious sexual abuse – introduced, with imprisonment between six and ten years. But he does not believe it will have any deterrent effect.

” hope to it in any greater extent, it would prevent or deter crime, I believe this is to hope too much. It may be important for the society, sometimes to highlight that certain actions are absolutely unacceptable. But to hope to believe that it leads to the fact that the people do not commit this type of documents because they get discouraged, yes it is hard to imagine, ” says Jerzy Sarnecki.

Sexualbrottskommittén will also propose a law based on consent and that the våldtäktsbegreppet replaced by the sexual abuse, something that Madeleine Leijonhufvud welcome.

– Both the general public and people who become victims of a sexual assault often find it difficult to see it as the word rape. It is also a very old-fashioned word that not people understand. This is a word that does not fit into the Swedish language today. It is better to give it a name that people recognize, ” says Madeleine Leijonhufvud.
