Sweden Leijonborg resign as chairman of the Karolinska Institute (KI), announces he said. Responsible Minister clapping and pointing to the future investigation of the board’s responsibility in the so-called Macchiarini affair.

The Minister for Higher Education and Research Helene Hellmark Knutsson (S) is pleased to Leijonborg depart.

I think it’s good that he takes responsibility and leave the presidency at the Karolinska Institute after what has happened, says Hellmark Knutsson said.

She had a conversation with Leijonborg on Friday, as he outlined a conversation he had with the lawyer Sten Heckscher, who investigates KI. The report will be on Monday and is expected to contain criticism of the board.

That I have not yet seen, but what was clear from this conversation was that, among other things pointing to the board’s responsibility in terms of how the Karolinska Institute has worked, which in this case has led to the conclusion that people have gone bad. It has damaged the confidence of both the Karolinska Institute and the Swedish Medical Research, said Hellmark Knutsson.

How KI acted

The investigation has Sten Heckscher, former President of the Supreme Administrative Court, and his colleagues Ingrid Carlberg and Carl Gahmberg examined Macchiarini case. The surgeon Paolo Macchiarini 2010-2016 was employed at KI. Relatively early arose suspicions of scientific fraud and other irregularities. Investigators will decide on how KI acted in response to suspicions.

Leijon’s own explanation of departure:

I’ve got a short presentation of the report by Sten Heckscher and he has explicitly said that the report itself does not entail that I depart. It was Sten Heckscher conclusion anyway.

“Still, resign”

, I would resign in April, and given the changes that are waiting, it is better if someone should sit for longer than I can handle it, continues Leijonborg.

HH: What do you think about this and the board’s actions?

I have really nothing more to say.

Leijonborg – also former leader of the Liberal Party (now the Liberals) and the Higher Education and Research – first announced his resignation in an email to TT.

“Expected”

“Although the Board may not interfere in the research, and therefore has no direct responsibility for Macchiarini affair, there is much more in the surrounding systems that need to be changed. there, the board of course, a great responsibility,” writes Leijonborg among else.

In February, among others, Nobel laureate and Professor emeritus Arvid Carlsson to hard attacks against the political decisions that they considered the stage for Macchiarini affair, and that is about how the funds are distributed among the universities. A system Leijonborg as minister been responsible for.

There I had expected. I’m a little surprised that it comes so late, says Carlsson told TT on Leijon’s resignation.

The Facts: Several investigations

There are several ongoing investigations into the surgeon Paolo Macchiarinis operations in Sweden.

this week unveiled the investigator Kjell Asplund, Professor emeritus and former Director General of the National Board, an investigation by Macchiarinis clinical operations at the Karolinska University hospital. This investigation showed that the hospital failed in the responsibility of a number of serious points.

On Monday presented a study by the Karolinska Institute’s actions. This investigation led by Sten Heckscher, former President of the Supreme Administrative Court.

Background: The scandal surrounding Macchiarini

The scandal surrounding “star surgeon” Paolo Macchiarini and his activities at Karolinska University hospital and Karolinska institutet have led many to resign from their posts.

the first was former President of KI, Anders Hamsten, who resigned from the post in February. A few days later also resigned Rector Council Jan Carlstedt-Duke and Dean for Research, Hans-Gustaf Ljunggren.

All three had previously courted Paolo Macchiarini of charges of research misconduct – even though the independent reviewer Bengt Gerdin concluded that there have been scientific misconduct (cheating).

at the same time also forced Urban Lendahl, secretary of Karolinska Institutet’s Nobel Committee, resign.

Only a month later, in March 2016 were also Macchiarini fired. But not because of the controversial luftstrupsoperationerna but to have provided false information in his resume, has not reported its ancillary activities and for having damaged KI’s reputation.

Last Wednesday Kjell Asplund its investigation of the Karolinska University Hospital role in the affair, then hospital director immediately agreed with two clinic managers to take “time out”. The two department heads had periodically been Paolo Macchiarinis immediate superiors at the hospital.
