Sunny summer increases the risk of skin cancer – Swedish Dagbladet

Over 49 000 people suffer every year from skin cancer. Of the most serious form, malignant melanoma, diagnosed annually about 3 300 people and several hundred of them die.

– There is a steady increase in the number of skin cancer cases in a few percent each year, which we regard very seriously, says Olle Larkö, professor of dermatology at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital.

The reason that skin cancer cases are on the increase is that we simply are too many hours in the sun.

– It should not sunbathe without clothes more than a maximum of an hour a day, he says.

But to keep in the shade this summer has not been easy. According to SMHI has been a record number of sunshine hours in several locations around the country. In Storlien sun has not shone much since the survey started in 1953 and also Östersund record of 1957 was proposed. According Wiene Josefsson, meteorologist at SMHI, this means that the cancer-causing UV radiation has been much higher than normal.

– The ozone layer was thinner than normal in view of the high pressure that has been, he says.

an extra warm and sunny summer increases the risk of more people suffer from skin cancer, according to Olle Larkö likely.

– The weather has been quite clearly a risk factor for so many just bodies, I have almost never seen before , he says.

According to him, it is not enough to re-apply sunscreen. Instead, they should put on his clothes, hat and sunglasses to protect themselves from the dangerous UV rays. Extra care should be taken if you are a redhead or have fair skin.

At the same time he believes that the results of this year’s exposure to the sun becomes visible first of five to fifteen years.

– Then we will probably see an increase in skin cancer cases due to people sunbathed too much this year, he says.

Malignant melanoma can occur in normal liver spots or moles why it’s good to check them regularly.

– If they change themselves should show them at their medical center, he says.
