"Forest fire shows why it's time to open the borders" – Nyheter24

“Globalizing solidarity, open the border, because I am convinced that if I ended up in the same situation would someone do it for me, “writes freelance journalist Daniel Breece.

The worst forest fire in the modern era. The fire is out of control, and despite major rescue and firefighting efforts, people have died and thousands forced to flee their homes. Today, Sweden, yesterday Congo, Romania tomorrow.

Play with the idea that Västmanland is a separate country, and that all those thousands of people who fled the fire could be seen as refugees in Sweden. Pounding on the doors of our borders, chased by fire. A mass migration, but its like, impossible to deal with. For we do not have neither the time, advice, or location. We close the border and offer on-site assistance. Or? Social media swamped right now over the posts that bear witness to a fantastic social responses. Everything else had really been unthinkable.

A man in need is a fellow human in need, a sister, a brother. The help is now reaching beyond the direct humanitarian. A woman with a yard full of horses got through a post on Facebook directly help of people nearby who came with cars and horse trailers are ready to help her move her horses to safer places. Hundreds of cows is now being place on the new farms safer. “For I am convinced that if I ended up in the same situation would someone do it for me” as one of the farm owners told Swedish radio.

It did not take long before the plane from Italy and France, were on their way to assist in the extinguishing of the fire. One of the world’s richest countries must now therefore international help, not even we can handle this ourselves.

Soon the fumes have dissipated themselves and left are the ashes of its former life. But the fire is raging on, not here, but there. Who are we? We may be brothers, sisters, neighbors. Globalize solidarity, open the border, because I am convinced that if I ended up in the same situation would someone do that for me
