Ebola outbreak increases malaria death – Västerbotten Courier

The Ebola outbreak in West Africa, which led to the healthcare collapsed, has got worse consequences than previously feared.

Additional least 11 000 people have died in three countries as a result of malaria attacks, new research shows.

In addition to the nearly 4000 died due to insect nets – a simple measure to protect themselves against malaria-carrying mosquitoes – could not be delivered.

The conclusions drawn by researchers who analyzed data on malarariapreventionen and care in Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia – the countries worst affected by the recent Ebola outbreak.

In a scenario in which researchers describe as the worst case, the number of malaria cases increased by 45 percent in Guinea to 1.6 million sufferers. In Sierra Leone, as many as 1.3 million people have become sick, which is an increase of 88 percent. The greatest is the percentage increase in Liberia, where the number of malaria-stricken more than doubled to 520 000 cases.

Because the nursing staff had to prioritize Ebola cases, it has resulted in the 5600 malaria deaths in Guinea, 3900 in Sierra Leone and 1500 in Liberia, according to the research team led by Pat Walker at Imperial College in London.

– Our calculations show the true magnitude as Ebola outbreak has brought with it, he said.
