Nurse Johanna Davidsson, 33, didn’t have to be alone on christmas eve.
After skidat to the south pole in a new record time waited for a well-deserved christmas celebration with the team in place.
– It took 38 days and 23 hours to arrive, ” she says on the satelittelefon.
Johanna Davidsson from Normlösa in Östergötland was on julaftonskvällen the fastest woman ever to ski to the south pole from the Antarctica the coast.
Her enmansexpedition started at Hercules Inlet on november 15. The gasket she pulled in a sled, at the start weighed 120 kilos. The plan was to harvest the approximately 110 mile in about 50 days and become the first Swedish woman ever to alone ski to the south pole.
But already on christmas eve was Johanna Davidsson said.
– I am jättelycklig that have come up. It is clear that I am worn out after many days with very skidande, but I feel still good.
the Wind and cold
She came to the south pole in 38 days and 23 hours. Thus, she struck brittiskan Hannah McKeands previous record.
– I hit it with maybe nine hours. No big margins, but still fun.
Johanna Davidsson hit new record does not mean that the journey has been free from severe trials.
– the Start was quite windy, but above all it is the last week that has been tough. We have been up at a higher altitude, it is the thinner air and colder, down to 25 minus. The snow has been pretty sluggish, so it has gone heavier with pulkan. Some days I have not seen anything, you can just look at the compass to see that you are on the right path.
Dropped the jacket
in Addition, put at risk the record of a dropped down coat.
– I had fixed it a little bad on pulkan as it went by. I got the pods back an hour and was happy when I saw that it remained, it was luck that it did not blew more.
What do you think of when you go?
– Mind wanders quite a lot. Sometimes I think about a lot of kilometers and the time, but sometimes I think about the near and dear ones, on the things I done, things I want to do.
– Sometimes I listen to music or audiobook, among other things, "the Woman on the train" that was exciting.
Lunch at the chilean time
After resting a few days, Johanna Davidsson get back the same way she came in. This time she will take the help of the wind and kitesegla on the ski back to the coast.
But first waited for the christmas celebration with the approximately 150 people who work at the research station at the south pole.
– They are on chilean time here, so it’ll soon be christmas lunch. Then there will be some good food and festivities.
