Lift for minority languages in school – Helsingborgs Dagblad

The Agency has developed draft curricula for Finnish, Yiddish, Meänkieli (Torne Valley Finnish) and Romani Chib. Previously it has only been a syllabus for the fifth minority language, Sami.

A change in the Education Act makes it possible for students to fundamentally learn a minority language in the context of mother tongue education. The requirement that one of the parents should have native speakers, or the student must have a basic knowledge of the language is released. The idea is that children and young people should be able to pick up a language that existed in previous generations.
