Additional least 11 000 people have died in three countries as a result of malaria attacks, new research shows.
In addition to the nearly 4000 died due to insect nets – a simple measure to protect themselves against the malaria-carrying mosquitoes – could not be delivered.
The conclusions drawn by researchers who analyzed data on malarariapreventionen and care in Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia – the countries worst affected by the recent Ebola outbreak.
In a scenario in which researchers describe as the worst case, the number of malaria cases increased by 45 percent in Guinea to 1.6 million sufferers. In Sierra Leone, as many as 1.3 million people have become sick, which is an increase of 88 percent. The greatest is the percentage increase in Liberia, where the number of malaria-stricken more than doubled to 520 000 cases.
