Keep track of the street wells – Norra Västerbotten

If the sun is shining – ugh and fy for heat. When the rain is pouring down, it is equally bad it if it fills the basement and storage room. Every year thousands of Swedish households by the floods.

Heavy rains and floods do not need to make the area look like Venice to do damage. It is enough downpour that gets congested manholes and sewer pressing off the water the wrong way, so that it finds its way into the basement and garage.

But to reduce risk can itself keep track in advance.

– Make clear to you where floor drains and sewer available in your area and be sure to clear away leaves and other things that can hinder says Barbro Näslund Landmark, an expert in natural hazards at the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB).

It can make a big difference, just like drainpipes and gutters should be kept clean of debris. And do not forget the ceiling when loose or broken tiles can give water free way into the house.

Other tips from the authorities and insurance companies is to sort of sense in basements. Family photos and other water-sensitive should not be at the bottom, where the flood risk is greatest. Loose objects may float away and block the wells.
