The archbishop wants to see the government be reconciled with the Sami – Swedish Radio

The question of a truth and reconciliation commission for the Sami population has been driven for a long time by the Sami Parliament.

– It is important that the government takes its responsibility for the colonial past that we have and the wrongs committed against the Sami. And therefore we need a truth and reconciliation commission, says Antje Jackelén.

One of those who pushed the issue is Josefine Skerke, vice president of the Sami Parliament’s board.

– Sweden must come to terms with its colonial history and the abuse that Sami has suffered in the form of measurements must, forced sterilization, forced displacement and abuse in schools.

According to the Sami Youth League Sáminuorras Chairman Isaac Utsi so, Sweden is still the colonial power.

– you can say that there is an ongoing colonization than today. It kills slowly the Saami people’s culture and identity. Reindeer herding is extremely vulnerable to mining exploitations, wind, hydro and forestry. You do not listen to the Sami votes.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission calling for is not just about förorätter in förlutna, but also about the rights of day, for example to schooling Sami.

the responsible minister Alice Bah Kuhnke has declined to comment on the call for a commission.
