Some articles in the British scandal newspaper the Daily Mail has the past week created confusion on social media and extremist sites.
some Swedish Internet users could not read three of the British newspaper’s articles about the murder of a refugee center in Mölndal. “Unfortunately, we can not find the page you’re looking for” was mortified the Swedish readers got.
For the conspiracy theorists was the explanation given. “Do you dare write about the government’s abuse of power?” wondering, for example, an upset readers in an email to gp.se and comments are pouring in on Facebook.
In the alternative site Flashback aired various theories; FRA, censorship filters, the Swedish government has been lobbying against the newspaper and the old favorite in this kind of context Zog, a conspiracy theory according to which the Jews secretly control everything. On the extreme right-wing editorial pages was considered that no “systemic impede the gathering of news about the murder.”
The truth came rather quickly. It was the Daily Mail’s own lawyers who ordered the blocking of Swedish readers, writes Andreas Ekström in Sydsvenskan.
The British press has been more cautious in recent years after a series of publishing scandals with big damages as a result. In this case, however, the lawyers seem to have been a little too cautious, and the newspaper’s IT technicians incompetent.
The three articles speculating on the motives and enter the offender’s identity with name and picture. Nothing unusual in the British gutter press. The British lawyers believe that this would be contrary to Swedish law. Hardly. Swedish media usually refrain from publishing names and photographs of suspects until they possibly doomed, but it is primarily about the press ethics serious media is not about the law. Either apply British law for British newspapers.
Moreover, the blockage is not particularly effective. Article links are not working from a desktop computer, however, most mobile phones and from a desktop computer, when using an anonymising browser service.
To a surprising number of people have come to believe that the Swedish state, or some other mysterious force , censored foreign media are now just one of many conspiracy theories that abound online. To take just a few examples SVT has not cut off the bull Feredinand from Kalle Christmas, Sollefteå does not give Muslims free sniper training, MP Kent Ekeroth (SD) do not prohibit pepper salami, coin lock is not car thief DEVICES new tricks, Tiger Woods will not sell an island in Lake Mälaren …
a good first place to check out, if you come across something that seems very upsetting or violently, incidentally Metro’s Viral Inspector.
