Sahlin calls for better information from the police – Sveriges Radio

126 people have returned to Sweden after they have been affiliated to al-Qaeda-inspired groups in the Middle East. Who those people are, and where they live, are often no local government finds out, according to Mona Sahlin, the national coordinator against violent extremism.

– There is a high risk that those returning are seen as heroes. They can be role models who knowingly recruit others. Then you have more than the police know who these people are, to be able to vaccinate citizens and the environment from it, she says.

When municipalities do not know the persons who may be in need of prevention can at worst lead to not reach potential recruiters, think Sahlin, but it can also mean that you do not find families with children who come home from iS-controlled area.

– It means that when children start school or kindergarten, so do not kindergarten staff or teachers about what the kids have been through and why they act out or fight. It thus becomes difficult to actually protect these children, she says.

Recently, the exchange of information between the Security Service and Police improved, according to Sahlin, but that in itself does not mean that municipalities are adequately informed.

Sapo answers in an email to echo in some cases certain sharing of information to social services, but that sometimes is prevented by confidentiality. SAPO also points out that it is usually the police authority to pass on relevant information to civil society.

Even the Police Authority pointing on difficult privacy considerations, and that the new police organization right now is strained, but Mona Sahlin do not think that’s the whole explanation.

– it is also about the old prejudices about what police work is, and what social work is. Many look down on preventive work and see it as a fuzzy part of the business. I mean there is an equally important part that the law enforcement part, she says.

Jonas Hysing , manager to national tactical advice, do not agree with Mona Sahlin’s description. Communication with municipalities to improve, believe Hysing, but he does not think it is any reluctance to support municipalities.

– There are problems on the road: some legal, some structural and some that is that we have not come so far in our own development. But we really want this to work well, and aims to support municipalities in the preventive work is very high, says Jonas Hysing.
