Demands for increased diversity within the Police – Sveriges Radio

– The better the police are on to reflect the entire community the better it will be to solve crimes, says Interior Minister Anders Ygeman (S).

Police Authority has longer struggled with low numbers of employees with a foreign background. In 2014 it constituted the group of seven per cent of the total number of staff officers. The corresponding figure for the number of women was 30 percent.

According to Interior Minister Anders Ygeman have both shares up, not least because of the insecurity in the group of foreign-born increases, according to the National Crime Prevention Council’s security survey (NTU). But he does not want to put any goals in terms of numbers.

Lena Nitz’s Police Association Chairman. She believes that diversity work has been neglected within the authority and welcomes the government’s new requirements.

– Police forces should be characterized by diversity. We are convinced that a team of people from different cultures allows a better police work, says Lena Nitz.

But she notes at the same time that diversity efforts must be made in the long term.

– this is a job that must be done continuously and not over a period of time says Lena Nitz.
