In a collaboration between SLU, Gothenburg University and the Natural History Museum guarded stocks of perch and eelpout along the coast. Now it has been discovered that the fishermen have got poorer immune system and metabolism, and that their sexual glands and liver have been adversely affected.
– This negative trend is a warning signal that something is not right in the environment, says Jens Olsson, SLU researchers, told the newspaper.
The samples were taken in areas without much influence of human activities, causing deterioration even more enigmatic. The researchers are now looking for an explanation.
Jens Olsson points out that it is not dangerous to eat the fish.
– The environmental toxins and heavy metals we tested for are generally below the limit for human consumption.
