Åsa Romson severely criticized after comparing the situation in the Mediterranean with Nazi extermination camps of Auschwitz and called Roma for “gypsies”.
After the party leaders debate on SVT’s Agenda tried she was late last night to explain his gaffes.
– It was perhaps not the most appropriate wording, she says.
The party leaders hit last night together in Agendas great debate on SVT. When immigration is discussed as the first agent said Deputy Prime Minister Åsa Romson (MP), which caused many to react. After having called for more EU countries must take greater responsibility for receiving refugees she raised the issue of the thousands of boat people who died in the Mediterranean Sea when they fled towards Europe.
– We’re making the Mediterranean to the new Auschwitz.
The statement caused outcry – both from the government, the opposition and the Jewish representatives.
– We are celebrating right now it is 70 years since the war ended and I become extremely upset of the comparison she makes. The industrial murder as the Nazis during the Holocaust can not relativize. With an extreme right gaining ground in Europe must not make such a comparison. It is ignorant and absurd, says Lena Posner-Körösi, chairman of the Jewish Central Council in Sweden.
Got harsh criticism
After the debate was also Romsons government colleague, Prime Minister Stephen Löfven (S); Critical:
– I understand Jane’s feelings for what is happening on the Mediterranean but I do not think there was any successful comparison, he says.
C-leader Annie Lööf says she reacted strongly during the debate.
– It was ideology and Nazism that made that Jews were exterminated in Auschwitz. It is not at all what we see now in the Mediterranean. This is also disgusting, thousands of people drown in their eagerness to reach freedom and security. But comparing it to the Auschwitz I think is very guts.
After the debate, said Romson that she used an “expletive”.
– It was perhaps not the most appropriate formulation. I wanted to show that Europe is not taking the situation seriously. People die in the Mediterranean – we must grasp the political decision to prevent it.
Do you regret it?
– It was a powerful expression of the desperation I feel. It is possible that my expression of power is not always lands right.
Called Roma for “gypsy”
When Asa Romson left the SVT building with Löfven late last night she developed further.
– I have been clear that it was not meant to make any analogy, Hitler’s Germany can not … it is entirely for itself, but I would not take back anything that diminishes the human killings in day, progress on the Mediterranean. There is a huge human catastrophe which we should have more political debates about how we, not only in Sweden but with more European countries will be able to solve.
But the Nazi fadäsen was not the only Romson was criticized for. SVT’s redirection would Romson explain his statement about Auschwitz. Then she called Roma for “Gypsy” twice. Any hour, she asked for excuse for this through his press secretary.
“humiliated the entire Romani nation”
Romsons latter statement has it received very harsh criticism. Emir Selimi is chairman of Young Roma and he and the organization is very critical to the Deputy Prime Minister’s statement.
– She has humiliated all over the Roma nation, and especially Roma children and young people who are struggling to have an open-minded family says Emir Selimi.
He will meet May 13 Stefan Löfven and will then talk about Romsons statement and the importance of knowledge of Roma history and culture.
On 19 May, the Emir Selimi lecturing for the Green Party. He hopes that Åsa Romson going to listen.
– Otherwise it will be another humiliation against our people, and with what she said. If she does not come, does that mean that she does not care, ask Selimi.
